HB Underground Championships Rd#6

It was another beautiful sunny California day at the last round of the HB Underground, chalk full of high temps, fast cars, and loads of sunscreen. Minus the bikini clad babes it was like racing at the beach. The on track action was fierce as always with a new class making its official debut; the 2 door SR (Scale Replica) class. With loads of talent huddled under canopies and a sweet BCR track baking in the sun we knew we were in for one of the most exciting races of the entire season.

MORE SUPPORT!!!!!

HB would like to thank Speed Shop Hobbies for making the trek down to Orange County once again to support the Underground event. Not only did they have a sweet "temporary shop" setup, they also provided a free hot dog to every racer in attendance. These events couldn't be done without the support of our great local hobby shops and Speed Shop Hobbies did a great job once again. If you're looking for r/c equipment check out Speedshophobbies.com, they can get you everything you need.

Concourse Competition

As with all HB Underground events the day began with the concourse competition. This may have been the toughest round to judge as many drivers brought their A-game to the judging table. In the end the winner wasn't an incredible painter, but rather an expert at decal application, as Daniel Fang took home the win with a body 70% covered in stickers. Congratulations Daniel and thank you for making the trek out from Hong Kong to compete with us.

Spec Class Action

Since the first round of the HB Underground the Spec class has been filled with intensely close racing and it shows no signs of letting up. Last month Oliver Clipper grabbed the TQ spot with his lightning fast Cyclone S, only to be denied the win when his car stood still at the tone. He channeled his frustration from the last round and once again took the top spot on the grid. Alex Neverette (The defending, and only two time champion in the class) qualified second with Mark Barden (the Sultan of Seconds) rounding out the top 3.

The main event saw TQ Oliver jump out to the lead with Alex and the field in hot pursuit. After what can only be described as some "heavy petting" going no in the back of the field the top three began to stretch out their lead with Oliver on top and Alex and Mark in tow. Mark's car started to sound a bit worse for the wear at the halfway point and he began to fall back from the leaders. Alex pushed as hard as he could but it wasn't meant to be as Oliver kept his foot in it and came home with the win. Alex Neverette finished in second with Mark Barden just holding on for the third spot.

Spec + Class

Of the two classes Spec + has yielded the larger range of competitors with a chance at the top 3. With last round's champion Tony Phalen missing the event for a Sailor Moon convention it was the perfect opportunity for a new star to step up and get a piece of the action. Qualifying in this class was extremely close, so close in fact that I can't remember the qualifying order. (The heat had set in at that point) I do remember; however, that it involved an epic battle between Mike Rydwell and Joel Navarro (of RC Car Action Fame). The battle continued straight through qualifying and into the main event as Rydwell and Navarro raced extremely close and avoided numerous close calls over 5 minutes. Dennis Vice found himself in the mix early as well, but later found him a board or two and dropped a ways back in third. In the end Rydwell was able to bring home the victory and 300 big ones with Joel Navarro in Second and Dennis Vice in Third.

2 Door SR Class

Making its debut at Rd 6 was the 2 door Scale Replica class, a racing class that combines the need for precision detailing as well as precision driving. Participants in this class are first entered into a concourse competition in which all of their vehicles are ranked from first to last. Drivers receive points for their finishing position. (Ex. Best in show gets 1pt, second gets 2ptsÂ…etc) Participants then compete in 4 heads up races and receive points for their finishing position in those races. Points are awarded on the same scale as in the concourse. A driver's concourse points are combined with his/her points total from the racing portion of the event to determine their overall score. After the four grueling rounds of racing the win went to Daniel Fang whom came all the way from Hong Kong for business, and to compete in the event took the overall win with his sweet Cyclone S "Mclaren Edition." Second and third went to a pair of Lotus inspired Cyclones with Charles finishing second and Craig Nordstrom (winner of the concourse portion) finishing third.

With that another round of the HB Underground has come to a close. We would like to once again thank everyone that participated and we hope to see you all again at the next round. A huge thanks also goes out to Raff of Bending Corners as well as Speed Shop Hobbies for their excellent work. Thank you also to Jason for the excellent pictures.

We will see you all at Bending Corners once again for round #7 on Sunday June 29th.

Special Announcement - All SR class participants at rd #7 will receive a complimentary Hara Twister speed control with their entry.
